Trace

Trace logs will help you track of all the actions taken by Overwolf and make sure that everything is running smoothly. Use these logs to view basic system information, Overwolf user information (If the user is logged in), the users gamelist version and if Windows Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) is enabled. It's also important to check that the overlay is enabled, if Overwolf helpers launched correctly, which extensions are running, which Overwolf processes are running, when Overwolf processes have closed, and other processes currently running on the computer and to look for possible conflicts.

To access the trace log:

  1. Press the Windows Key + R, then in type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Overwolf\Log in the dialog box. This opens the path to the log files.
  2. To identify the latest trace file, look for a file name with the following pattern Trace_<yyyy-mm-dd_hh-mm_xxxxx.log (e.g., Trace_2025-12-01_10-13_31132.log).
  3. Open the file with your preferred text editor to view it's contents.

The trace log is broken down into different sections:

  • Application modules and services—this section contains entries that apply to specific services in the Overwolf client.
  • End user settings—this section contains entries that apply to the state of the end user including hardware settings and other pertinent information.
  • User settings—this section contains information about the user's installed apps and settings.

The trace logs can help you diagnose issues both during development of you app and after you have deployed it. Contact Overwolf support should you need help understanding issues that may appear in this log.

How to read a trace log entry​

The trace log is a running list of log entries that show a history of user activities and user configurations. Each entry consists of 5 parts:

  • Timestamp—the date and time the action was recorded.
  • Entry type—the type of entry.

    Pay particular attention to the WARN and ERROR types. The could indicate issues that exist in the client or in an app.

  • Component/Thread ID—identifies the module or the thread that generated the message.
  • PID—the process ID number the OS has assigned to the service.
  • Service and description—the name of the service that generated the log entry. Use this as a keyword search to track specific Overwolf client services that may have a conflict with an an app.

Example 2: GPU and HAGS​

This example shows which GPU is used and if Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) is enabled. If it is enabled, and causing issues with recording, ask the user to disable it using the Common video capture issues guide.
